Before she became a television icon as Dorothy Zbornak on The Golden Girls, Bea Arthur (born Bernice Frankel) served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. Enlisting in 1943 as one of the first members of the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve, she trained as a typist before transferring to the Motor Transport School at Camp Lejeune. She later worked as a truck driver and dispatcher at Cherry Point, North Carolina, rising to the rank of staff sergeant before her honorable discharge in 1945. After her service, she briefly pursued medical technology before finding her true calling in acting, eventually becoming a beloved star of stage and screen.
