A Fayetteville, NC, native and Army brat, Col. Cummings received her commission from the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Appalachian State University, Boone, NC who has honored her as a Distinguished Alumnus.
Col. Cummings served 25 years in the U.S. Army with assignments at Georgetown University, the Pentagon, and NORAD/USNORTHCOM in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Following her retirement, she held various contract management roles, management positions, and led homeland security and information technology initiatives as a contractor for federal agencies.
Col. Cummings has advocated for the 6888th by raising funds for the monument, co-producing the “Six Triple Eight” documentary, and championed the Congressional effort to enact the passage of the Six Triple Eight Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2021, the nation’s highest civilian honor. On March 14, 2022, President Biden signed the legislation into law. Additionally, her efforts led to congressional legislation to designate a Buffalo, NY postal facility as the Indiana Hunt-Martin Post Office.
Col. Cummings was inducted into the Army Women’s Foundation Hall of Fame and currently serves on their Board of Directors. She has been recognized with numerous awards to include Military Officers Association of America National Changemaker, NAACP’s Jesse Brown Distinguished Leadership Award, The Center for Women Veterans Trailblazer Award, Afro American Newspaper’s 2023 Person of the Year and the Buffalo Soldiers Association of West Point Sgt. Sanders H. Matthews Veteran Award. Col Cummings has been inducted into the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., as an honorary member and was honored as an Outstanding Alumnus by the U.S. Army War College Foundation.
Col. Cummings serves as the tour historian for the 6888th European Tour hosted by Stephen Ambrose Tours and is a consultant for the upcoming 6888th Broadway bound musical. Her memoir, A Soldier’s Life, A Black Woman’s Rise from Army Brat to Six Triple Eight Champion is due to be published by the University of Virginia Press in Spring 2025. Through her Col Cummings leadership, advocacy, and business acumen, the 6888th’s history has reached millions of audiences worldwide.
Col. Cummings holds a Master of Strategic Studies, Army War College, and a Master of Science Degree in Foundations of Education, Troy State University. She currently serves as the Vice President of Windsor Group, LLC and an Army Reserve Ambassador for Maryland, a special government employee position equivalent to a two-star general in the Armed Forces.
