Sergeant Caryn E. Nouv was born August 9th, 1983, in Hershey, Pennsylvania. She was adopted in June 1989. She attended Tabb High School in Yorktown, Virginia, where she participated in the marching band and flag corps. She graduated in 2002 and joined the U.S. Army in 2009.
Initially trained to be a signal support systems specialist, while in Afghanistan on her first combat deployment, Nouv worked as a convoy escort driver. Assigned to 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, this role took her and other soldiers outside the safety of the base on a routine basis.
On July 27th, 2013, in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan, Sergeant Nouv was killed when her vehicle was attacked with small-arms fire and hit by an improvised explosive device. Sergeant Eric T. Lawson was also killed in the attack. Sergeant Nouv was 29.
Sergeant Nouv is remembered as a mother who overcame challenges and sought purpose and stability for her family through her career in the military. Sergeant Melissa Raposo recalled of Nouv that she “had this contagious laugh that would just light up the room. She was a great noncommissioned officer who knew her job well and would stop just about anything she was doing to help someone out.”
Sergeant Caryn E. Nouv is buried at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, City of Suffolk, Virginia.
