Specialist Ember Alt was born June 28th, 1991. A graduate of Killeen High School in Texas, Alt was a natural athlete and helped lead her track team to the State finals during her senior year. She joined the Army in 2011 and was remembered as a vibrant and artistic person who left a lasting impact on her fellow soldiers. A lover of poetry, Alt would often share her writing with friends back home as a way to stay connected.
On June 18th, 2013, in Bagram, Afghanistan, Specialist Alt was killed by indirect fire from a rocket attack. Sergeant Justin R. Johnson, Specialist Robert W. Ellis, and Specialist William R. Moody were also killed in the attack. At the time, her father was also in Afghanistan working as a civilian contractor. He escorted her body out of county to Ramstein Air Base in Germany, then to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, and finally on to Killeen, Texas. Specialist Alt was 21.
In Specialist Alt’s obituary, her loved ones reflected, “She was a vibrant and loving person who left a lasting impression on everyone she came into contact with… It’s rare to find a caliber like hers; to be so kind to everybody and so sweet, and in a way it makes you think people like that are invincible to things like this.”
Specialist Ember Alt is buried at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, Killeen, Texas.
