Summer of Self-Care: Self-Advocacy: A Cornerstone of Self-Care
September 7, 2022 @ 6:00 pm

Self-Advocacy, the ability to speak up for our needs, is an essential aspect of self-care. Not advocating for ourselves can result in stress, frustration and disempowerment. Some examples of self-advocacy include saying “no,” asking for help, and carving out needed “me time.” Yet, ingrained beliefs and fears often prevent us from voicing our needs.
Self-advocacy can be especially difficult for active service members and veterans whose service often entails considerable self-sacrifice and service to others. In this session, we will explore what aspects of our lives are calling for self-advocacy, what gets in the way of us advocating for ourselves and steps we can take on the path to becoming a self-advocate . The session will incorporate aspects of mindfulness and self-compassion covered in prior sessions as tools to assist us in developing our self-advocacy skills.
