On April 29th, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—affectionately known as the “Six Triple Eight”—was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of their extraordinary contributions during World War II. The nation’s highest civilian honor was presented to the family of unit commander Lieutenant Colonel Charity Adams Earley, with more than 300 families of the battalion in attendance.
Our CEO, Jodie M. Grenier, Programs Director Keshia Javis-Jones, and board member Al Kirton were honored to be part of this historic moment, standing alongside descendants, veterans, Congressional leaders, and advocates to celebrate the legacy of these trailblazing women who, against formidable odds, delivered more than just mail—they delivered hope to troops and restored communication amongst families and loved ones.
We’re especially grateful to COL Edna W. Cummings (Ret.) for her tireless leadership and mentorship. Edna’s years of advocacy made this long-overdue recognition possible and ensured the Six Triple Eight’s rightful place in our Nation’s history.
