The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) states that childcare is deemed affordable when it costs no more than 7% of a family’s household income. Yet, on average, families are spending 24% of their household income on childcare.
The cost of childcare was one of the biggest challenges Hannah, a US Army veteran, faced in her post military transition. She had spent the last ten years enlisted in the Army, and for six of those had also become the sole provider for her daughter, Madilyn.
Hannah’s greatest goal was to be a role model for her daughter.
As Hannah transitioned out of the military, she found a job and enrolled in a degree program, all the while navigating the extreme change of pace for both her and her daughter. As Hannah’s classes continued, she found her studies and assignments began to demand more of her time.
She tried picking up her daughter an hour later each day from daycare, however, the cost of additional childcare hours became a source of stress on both her budget and emotions. Hannah felt stuck until her college Veteran Resource Center referred her to our Childcare Assistance program.
“I’d been out of college for 10 years. I went back to school so I could be more competitive in the civilian world and better provide for my little girl. I wanted to be able to set a good example for my daughter to succeed and Foundation for Women Warriors gave me the boost to do just that.”
The cost of childcare put Hannah and many other veterans like her, at risk of sacrificing financial stability while delaying professional and academic goals. Thanks to your support, our programs are the bridge that allows these veterans to achieve post-military success.
Hannah has consistently placed at the top of her classes and was recently promoted at work thanks to her new skillset. While the professional goals Hannah continues to pursue are testament to the value of your support and her drive to succeed, Hannah is also achieving her greatest goal- serving as a role model for her daughter, Madilyn.
