On March 20th our Women Veteran Lead alumni and FFWW team members joined local women veterans and San Diego community members at Mt. Soledad Veterans National Memorial in honoring LtCol Evelyn ‘Jean’ Wright during their 4th annual Women’s History Tribute Brunch. LtCol Wright served 20 years in the Air Force with a career spanning nursing assignments across the globe. After receiving her nursing training at Mercy Hospital in San Diego (1951), she was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and went on to earn her flight nurse wings in 1954.
Throughout her distinguished career, LtCol Wright served with the 1453rd Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron in Japan, where she transported various patients across the Pacific to Travis AFB in C-135 aircraft. Her expertise in maternal nursing led to her developing and teaching the military’s first advanced obstetrical nursing course and eventually to her appointment as a Consultant in Maternal Nursing to the Surgeon General—groundbreaking accomplishments that shaped military healthcare for generations to come.
